Step by Step Checklist for new Students

  1. Apply to the College:
    • Online at apply.vccs.edu.
    • Veterans Benefits are coordinated through the Admissions and Records Office. Questions? Contact Aaron Whitacre at 540-868-7073.
    • Healthcare Admission: Admission to nursing, practical nursing, surgical technology and dental hygiene is competitive and separate from general college admission. Questions? Contact Health Professions at 540-868-7280.
  2. Apply for Financial Aid:

    Refer to the FINANCIAL AID ICON on the LFCC Web site for detailed information.

  3. Take Placement Test:

    New students must take placement tests in English, reading and math. The results of the tests help students and advisors determine an appropriate course schedule. Students whose scores indicate specific weaknesses may be required to enroll in and successfully complete skills improvement courses prior to college course work.

    At the Middletown Campus, placement testing is available on a first-come, first-serve basis when the College and library are open during the following hours:

    • Monday - Thursday, 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. (all tests must be completed by 7:30 p.m.)
    • Friday, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (all tests must be completed by 4:30 p.m.)
    • Saturday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

    At the Fauquier Campus, placement testing is available by appointment during the following hours:

    • Monday and Wednesday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
    • Tuesday and Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
    • Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

    At the Luray-Page County Center, placement testing is available by appointment during the following hours:

    • Monday - Thursday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

    Students MUST have one of the following photo IDs:

    • valid driver's license
    • passport
    • photo I.D. from D.M.V.
    • U.S. military I.D.

    Allow two and one-half hours to complete the assessment test.

    All students wishing to register for any English, reading, or math courses or any courses with a reading prerequisite ("+" in schedule) must complete placement testing prior to registration. Placement testing is computerized (you do not need special computer skills) and individualized (first come, first served basis). The test takes approximately two and one-half hours. Individualized testing for students with special needs may be arranged by contacting Larry Friedenberg at 540-868-7165.

    A student who presents SAT scores of at least 500 verbal and/or 500 math from testing within the last five years is not required to take placement testing and may register for college-level courses. SAT scores must be forwarded to the College's Testing Center directly from the College Board.

    Students unable to attend one of the dates listed are encouraged to contact the Testing Center at 540-868-7140 on the Middletown Campus to schedule an individual appointment. Contact the Fauquier Campus staff at 540-351-1515, and the Luray-Page County staff at 540-843-0722 to schedule an appointment.

  4. Register for a New Student Orientation:

    New students who plan to register for more than six credits or who plan to complete a degree or certificate are REQUIRED to attend a new student orientation. PLEASE BRING YOUR PLACEMENT TEST/SAT SCORES with you.

  5. Class Schedule:

  6. Special Needs Students:

    An application for disability support services and accommodations is available through the Counseling Offices.

  7. Pay Tuition:

    Before deadline listed on the LFCC home page, or your registration will be voided.
    Registration is complete only when tuition has been paid. The following methods of payments are available:

    • Online payments with VISA or MC (www.lfcc.edu - click on Financial Services).
    • Pay during business hours at the Business Office (Middletown or Fauquier Campuses). Checks, VISA, or MC are acceptable by mail.
    • Online F.A.C.T.S. deferred payment plan with checking/savings accounts, MC, Discover, or American Express (www.lfcc.edu - click on e-cashier).
    • After business hours, a drop box is available at the Middletown or Fauquier Business Office.

    Bookstore purchases must be paid directly to the LFCC Bookstore. Students who have financial aid awards should confirm with the Financial Aid Office about available funds to purchase books and supplies with their awards.

    Tuition rates are established by the State Board for Community Colleges and are subject to change. Tuition rates are indicated below:

    • In-State Students - $76.65 per credit
    • Out-of-State Contract Students (Student works for a State of Virginia Employer, and a Memorandum of Agreement {required every two years} and a letter {required each semester} needs to be completed by the employer - $96.65 per credit
    • Out-of-State Students - $248.80 per credit

    In-State Tuition: To be eligible for in-state tuition rates, a student must have been legally domiciled in Virginia for a period of at least one full year prior to the planned semester of enrollment at the College. Domicile is a legal concept which means more than simple residency in Virginia. An individual seeking eligibility for in-state tuition must demonstrate the intention of remaining in Virginia indefinitely.     Fees:

    • Student Activity Fee (SAF) - $1.15 per credit hour. This fee is charged to all students and funds various activities and events throughout the academic year.
    • Parking Facilities Maintenance Fee - $14 per semester. This fee is charged to all students enrolled and attending classes on the Middletown and Fauquier Campuses and provides for maintenance and construction of the campuses parking lots.
    • Technology Fee - $3.50 per credit hour. This fee is charged to all students and supports the technology requirements for classrooms and labs.
    • Capital Fee - $3 per credit hour. This fee is charged only to out-of-state contract and out-of-state students.
    • Note: A $20 fee is assessed for dishonored checks. Contractual billings are assessed late payment fees at 18 percent per annum.
