Welcome to Impact! – Letter from the Foundation’s New Board Chair, Charles Day
Greetings and welcome to this issue of Impact, the electronic newsletter of the Lord Fairfax Community College (LFCC) Educational Foundation Inc.!
I am Charles Day, the newly-elected chair of the Foundation Board and a resident of Shenandoah County.
This year, we are excited to introduce the Foundation’s new fundraising theme: Invest. Impact. Inspire.
This theme serves as a reminder as to why we support LFCC. By investing in the College – through time, money, ideas and more – we are able to significantly impact our community and inspire the lives of thousands of students!
I hope you enjoy reading this e-newsletter. You will see the Foundation’s 2008 fundraising theme – Invest. Impact. Inspire. – woven throughout the e-newsletter. This issue is packed with wonderful information about the Foundation’s impact and successes! I’m sure you’ll be excited to read about a scholarship recipient who recently met the president of the United States; the Foundation exceeding the $1-million mark for annual contributions; and the progress on the College’s new buildings!
We must never forget, as donors, that anything and everything we contribute to LFCC makes a difference.
If you have any ideas, suggestions or questions, now or in the future, please share them with Linnie Carter, vice president of college advancement at LFCC, at lcarter@lfcc.edu.
You have contributed to the Foundation’s remarkable achievements, and, for your contribution, we sincerely thank you!
Charles Day
Chair, LFCC Educational Foundation Board

Thank YOU for a Successful Year! – The Foundation’s Fundraising Activities
The LFCC Educational Foundation Inc. is managed by qualified, professional and ethical board members (including three certified public accountants) and staff; establishes specific criteria for funds and uses all contributions according to donors’ wishes; undergoes a complete and thorough financial audit each year; and has comprehensive, accessible information on the Foundation Web site: http://www.lfcc.edu/foundation/. Following is a breakdown of the Foundation’s 2007 fundraising activities.
By the Numbers
0Number of pledges included in the 2007 fundraising totals (Only “cash” contributions are included)34Total new funds, including 25 new scholarship funds!173Number of students whose lives were impacted by receiving a Foundation scholarship in 2007!439Number of generous donors who contributed in 2007!1.2 millionNumber of dollars contributed to the LFCC Educational Foundation Inc. in 2007!
The LFCC Educational Foundation Inc. continues to make great strides toward its goal of ensuring that all students have the opportunity to realize the power of their potential, regardless of financial constraints. The total amount of Foundation scholarships awarded for the 2007-08 academic year increased by 66 percent from 2005-06. In addition, the Foundation awarded scholarships to 166 students in 2007-08, compared to 141 students in 2006-07.
Due to enrollment increases, the number of students who did not receive scholarships increased from 96 during the 2006-07 academic year to 123 during the 2007-08 academic year. To respond to student needs, the Foundation is committed to raising scholarship funds to decrease and eventually eliminate the gap between the number of students who apply for scholarships and the number of students who receive them.
Invest. Impact. Inspire. – LFCC’s Fundraising Needs
The Foundation tirelessly works to fund critical College initiatives and assist LFCC in providing the highest quality learning environment for its students. Please see a list of the College’s funding needs and note that the LFCC Educational Foundation Inc. is raising funds for these projects: http://www.lfcc.edu/Foundation/waystogive/priorities.html.
Please review this information and let us know if you want to invest in the College by funding one of these initiatives. Your support is crucial and immensely appreciated! For your convenience, you may easily and securely donate online.
Check This Out! – A Creative Way to Give
Heather Burton, formerly Heather Painter, a counselor at LFCC’s Middletown Campus, recently included the LFCC Educational Foundation Inc. in her online wedding gift registry. Burton – who wed in January – saw the opportunity as a creative way to make a difference in the College and community. “This is the best gift that anyone could give us, because it gives back to the community,” Burton said.
You can do this, too! It’s a great idea for a special occasion, such as a wedding, anniversary, birthday, etc.! If you are interested, please contact Linnie Carter, vice president of college advancement at LFCC, at lcarter@lfcc.edu or 540-868-4077.

Braving the Elements – A Visit to the Virginia General Assembly
Dr. Ski, Linnie Carter and Charles Day (chair of the LFCC Educational Foundation Board) had the pleasure of leading a group of LFCC students on a visit to the Virginia General Assembly on Jan. 17, 2008. The students met many state elected officials, including:
- Sen. Mark D. Obenshain
- Sen. Jill Holtzman Vogel
- Delegate Clifford L. Athey Jr.
- Delegate C. Todd Gilbert
- Delegate L. Scott Lingamfelter
- Delegate Joe T. May
- Delegate Beverly J. Sherwood
One of our students plans to transfer to Virginia Tech in the fall and was delighted when Dr. Ski introduced her to the president of Virginia Tech. This young woman managed to get a picture with her future university president. To see their picture and others, please visit the online photo gallery.
Talk About Impact! – Grants at Work
Following is information about local and national supporters who have impacted LFCC students and the community by granting funds to the College for specific initiatives!
- B.J. Sager Inc. contributed funds to sponsor the Save a Life Tour in March 2008. The event — which will be held during Substance Abuse Awareness Week — will educate students and community members about the dangers of drinking and driving. It will be a powerful event you won’t want to miss!
- Donors contributed $2,300 for LFCC students to visit the Corcoran Gallery of Art, which is renowned for its extensive collections of 19th-century American Art and 20th-century painting, sculpture and photography. The students were very grateful for this outstanding learning opportunity.
- George’s Inc. contributed $150 toward participants' food, honoraria and transportation expenses for "Students at Risk: A Summit Meeting on Keeping Immigrant Students in School.” The summit – which was held in June – explored innovative programs and partnerships that will benefit immigrant students ages 14-18 who speak limited English, lack literacy development and have inconsistent formal education in their first language.
- Local dental professionals and the Virginia Dental Hygienists’ Association (VDHA) Foundation Inc. awarded funds to support the participation of 13 LFCC Dental Hygiene Program students and faculty members in the Virginia Dental Health Foundation’s Mission of Mercy (MOM) Project, which was held in May. The MOM Project is conducted in areas of Virginia where there are not enough dental professionals to provide services to all of the residents that require them. LFCC’s dental hygiene students and faculty members were among more than 200 volunteers who administered high-quality dental care to individuals who were unable to afford it. The smiles from the recipients of the care were ear-to-ear!
The funds also provided nine students with the opportunity to attend a professional development course of their choice at the VDHA annual session. The learning and practical experience that the dental hygiene students gained through these experiences was invaluable!
- Valley Proteins Inc. awarded $2,000 for 12 students who are members of LFCC’s Scientific Society — a student organization that is dedicated to fostering an interest in science among students — to attend “Bodies — The Exhibition” in Rosslyn, Va. This unique exhibition provided the students with the opportunity to view human specimens and learn about the intricacies of the human body.
This Year’s “Wow” Events! – LFCC’s Next Women’s Luncheon and Its First Men’s Luncheon
The LFCC Educational Foundation Inc. is in the beginning stages of planning its next Women’s Luncheon and its first Men’s Luncheon. The purpose of the luncheons is to celebrate women and men and raise much-needed funds for the College. Faculty Member Makes an Impact! – Brent L. Kendrick Receives Award
The State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) and Dominion recently announced the 12 faculty members from Virginia’s public and private colleges and universities who were selected as recipients of the 2008 Outstanding Faculty Award. Among the recipients was none other than Brent L. Kendrick, professor of English at Lord Fairfax Community College! The award honors faculty members for excellence in teaching, research, knowledge integration and public service.
Kendrick feels honored to have received the award. “I am thrilled to be one of the 12! I can’t imagine anywhere else on earth where I would have had such an opportunity,” said Kendrick. Following is a link to the 2008 Outstanding Faculty Awards: http://www.schev.edu/AdminFaculty/OFAprogramIndex.asp.
Catch the “Enhancement” Excitement! – QEP Update
The College is reaffirming its accreditation through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). As part of the reaffirmation process, LFCC has submitted a five-year Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) on the topic of critical thinking.
LFCC’s QEP was accepted by the SACS on-site team in October, and we will soon complete the suggested revisions to the plan. However, we didn’t wait to hear the final report before getting to work!
Faculty and staff have been sharing some excellent teaching ideas, from teaching students to recognize e-mail hoaxes to re-working exams so that students can demonstrate critical thinking more clearly. In spring 2008, faculty and students will receive weekly tips on teaching and using critical thinking, and students will see a critical thinking emphasis in student activities. Finally, three faculty members will be selected to travel to Nashville for a workshop on administering and scoring a faculty-designed test of critical thinking and informal reasoning.

A Presidential Encounter! – An LFCC Student Meets U.S. President George W. Bush
On Sept. 19, 2007, LFCC student Margie Clark spoke at LFCC’s Women’s Luncheon and met the legendary journalist Helen Thomas. One week later, on Sept. 27, 2007, she met U.S. President George W. Bush. Through hard work and determination, this high school dropout and single parent is achieving her dreams and experiencing things she never imagined.
Clark represented the Virginia Community College System at the signing of the College Cost Reduction and Access Act in Washington, D.C.
Before Bush signed the bill, he asked Clark to step forward. “My first thought was, ‘Is he really talking to me?’ That’s why I have such a stunned look on my face [in the picture to the right],” Clark said.
“I cannot put this experience into words. It was very exciting,” said Clark, a Fauquier County resident and accounting major at LFCC. “Meeting the president and senators was an enlightening experience. Before the bill signing, the president told me that community colleges have not received the recognition they have needed but are finally getting the recognition they deserve. The congressmen went on to add that community colleges need the recognition, because some of the most important things [in education] are happening at community colleges.”
Clark is the first of four children to go to college. But to even get to LFCC, she overcame numerous obstacles.
“I grew up in a family where we did not have much money. When we turned 16 years old, we were required to quit school and go to work to help our family pay the bills,” she says. At age 17, Clark was married, and by age 19 she had a child. After getting divorced, she decided to resume her education. She earned her GED and then enrolled at LFCC.
Since enrolling at LFCC in fall 2005, Clark has maintained a 4.0 grade point average. She has also juggled full- and part-time jobs and the responsibilities of raising her son. “Financial aid has benefited me in many, many ways. I would not be at the College or be able to make a better life for myself and my family without financial aid or scholarship assistance.”
After she graduates from LFCC with her associate of applied science degree in accounting – if she receives financial assistance – she plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree.
To the LFCC Educational Foundation Inc. and the donors who made her scholarship possible, she has a simple message: “I offer you my sincere gratitude for allowing me to have the opportunity to create a better life for me and my child.”

A Pair Who Care – The Emerson and Helen Williams Endowed Scholarship
Congratulations to Emerson and Helen Williams for establishing the Emerson and Helen Williams Endowed Scholarship! When asked why they made such a generous contribution to the College, Mr. and Mrs. Williams said, “We have the teaching bug. We are able to benefit those who need assistance and help them to be taught. Also, as retirees, we no longer actively impart knowledge. However, through this scholarship, we can still help with and facilitate learning.” The couple also noted their fondness for the current College president as a reason they chose to invest in the students at LFCC.
Honoring a Community-Minded Couple – LeRoy and Shirley Corron and the Corron Community Development Center
LFCC celebrates the Science and Health Professions Building grand opening this year. On the same day, the College will break ground on the Corron Community Development Center. You may be wondering, as many others are, “For whom is the Center named?”
Inspiring Change – Former Virginia Gov. Mark Warner and U.S. Sen. Jim Webb Visit LFCC
LFCC students, employees and friends were recently inspired by visits from two elected officials. Former Gov. Mark Warner visited the College’s Luray-Page County Center on Thursday, Jan. 10, 2008. U.S. Senator Jim Webb visited LFCC’s Middletown Campus on Friday, Jan. 11, 2008. The visits provided the legislators with a chance to tour LFCC’s facilities; meet with LFCC students and employees, College and Foundation Board members and local business leaders; and learn more about the important role that Lord Fairfax Community College and the Virginia Community College System play in educating the workforce of tomorrow. Please visit the online photo gallery to view pictures from the senator’s visit.
Please see the picture above of the former governor speaking at the Luray-Page County Center.
