Beginning in the late 1970s, Lord Fairfax Community College (LFCC) offered classes in Page County. Located at Luray High School, these evening classes often were the same offerings each year: a couple of English classes, a psychology class and a few history courses. Once students completed these classes, they traveled to the Middletown Campus to continue their studies. Unfortunately, the distance and expense of travel were often issues for many in the area.
In the mid-1990s, the Luray-Page County Chamber of Commerce, the Page County School Board and LFCC collaborated to increase the College’s course offerings at Luray High School. These courses were all aimed at satisfying the university transfer requirement. By 2002, the College had 95 students enrolled in classes in Page County. In fall 2004 LFCC increased its course offerings to eight classes, with an enrollment of 100 students.
Expansion Outlined to Meet Growing Needs
In spring 2005, the Luray Town Council and the Page County Board of Supervisors appropriated funds to build the Luray-Page County Center, an LFCC outreach site. Both groups designated $120,000 each to construct, equip and offset the initial costs of the Center. LFCC committed funds to purchase furniture and state-of-the-art technology for the Center. This technology includes distance learning equipment that enables students at the Luray-Page County Center to benefit from resources and classes available on LFCC’s main campuses.
As Page County and the region experience a renaissance, it is imperative LFCC works closely with the residents and leaders within the Town of Luray and Page County to offer the education and training programs and services needed by residents and employers,” said John J. “Ski” Sygielski, LFCC president. “The leadership and financial support of community members in Page County and the Town of Luray have been an essential component in the development of the Center. We are pleased to be partnering with the visionary leadership within Page County and the Town of Luray in the planning and construction of this new LFCC center.”
