Lord Fairfax Community College
Letter to the Editor – Regarding National Philanthropy Day

“We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give.” Winston Churchill understood the importance of service to the community. Individuals in the Commonwealth of Virginia serve the community in which they live through participating in community activities, volunteering for local organizations or financially supporting a nonprofit entity. These contributions may sometimes go unnoticed by the larger public. However, these individuals and their donation of time and money are the lifeblood of nonprofit organizations throughout the area.

In an effort to bring attention to and focus on the significant assistance individuals give to community-based organizations, National Philanthropy Day was instituted by the Association of Fundraising Professionals to be held each year on November 15. This special day is set aside to recognize individuals who donate their financial resources for the enrichment of the community and the world in which we live.

The Lord Fairfax Community College Educational Foundation, like other nonprofit organizations, would not be able to change the lives of the individuals it serves without the generous donations and financial support of the citizens of the Commonwealth.

Helen Keller said it best: “Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much.” National Philanthropy Day is significant, because it recognizes this motto. When individuals pull together to support a cause, their impact is much greater than if they were acting alone.

To everyone who contributes to the Lord Fairfax Community College Educational Foundation or any other nonprofit organization in the area, thank you! Thank you for helping to make Virginia a better place to live. Thank you for helping others achieve their dreams. Thank you for giving of yourselves!
