Scholarship Opportunities and Financial Aid
Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship Opportunities
In spring 2008, the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation will award scholarships to help students with exceptional promise and demonstrated financial need reach their full potential through education. Each award will fund a portion of educational costs, including tuition, fees, and living expenses for two to three years of a Jack Kent Cooke Scholar’s undergraduate degree.
At a minimum, each candidate must:
Complete freshman credits in 2007 at, or be a recent graduate (since spring 2003) of, an accredited community college or two-year institution in the US, and
- have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or better on a 4.0 scale;
- plan to transfer to a four-year college or university in fall 2008; and
- be nominated by his or her two-year institution.

Financial Aid News
It is not too late to apply for financial aid. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) now. If you are eligible for financial aid but paid for your fall classes, you will be reimbursed. If you complete the application process by Nov. 15, 2007, you may not need to pay for your spring classes up front. Visit the Financial Aid Office if you have questions about applying.

The Career Center and the Libraries want to announce a new online career resource for students, faculty, and staff:
The Vault Online Career Library includes full-text Vault Career Guides for a variety of careers, over 300+ company profiles, an internship database, Industry and occupation research and over 1,000 career advice articles. It also allows you to create a virtual resume.
You can access Vault from the Library’s Reference Sources & Databases page at http://www.lfcc.edu/Library/ref_title.htm. Students, faculty and staff can access Vault from off-campus with their MYLFCC username and password.

At LFCC, we’re all about thinking. In fact, as part of our re-accreditation process, LFCC has developed a Quality Enhancement Plan, or QEP, that will help everyone on campus become better at critical thinking. Most of you saw a PowerPoint related to critical thinking during the first weeks of October, and you received critical thinking tips via e-mail during the week of Oct. 22, 2007. As the QEP (Quality Enhancement Plan) Team Leader, I’d like to hear from you! How are you using critical thinking in your classes and in your jobs? What tricks or tips have you learned? How has your thinking become more clear, accurate, specific, relevant, or logical during this semester? Important Testing Center Dates!
Nov. 15, 2007 - TEAS testing begins for prospective nursing students. Please allow 3.5 hours for completion and a fee of $40 will be charged.
Oct. 1, 2007 - HOBET testing has begun for prospective Surgical Technician and Dental Hygiene students. Please allow 3 hours for the completion and a fee of $30 will be charged.

LFCC Essay Published
An English 111 student wrote a piece for the class about her daughter, who died from cancer in the UVA pediatric unit. Amanda Young’s work, The Rain Today, is published this fall 2007 in the Virginia Chapter, American Academy of Pediatrics and the Virginia Pediatric Society newsletters.
The hallway isn’t too bad, definitely warmer than it is inside. It’s a wide hallway, large enough for a bed and a few nurses. The carpet is slightly soiled, but nothing to complain about. It just looks like a lot people have been there before me.
Sitting here long enough, I start to question the lives of the people who have walked through here. How many dirty shoes did it take to make this carpet look so worn?
Was it the rain today? I have witnessed many people come in drenched from the water, with their cheerfully printed umbrellas in tote. Was it the shoes of a distraught mother? Was it a father rushing in from work, after hearing the news? No way was it the clergy that came earlier today to chat with me. He would have respectfully wiped his shoes before entering such a place.
I presume that this is something I’m subconsciously doing to keep my mind away from the monitors, continually beeping, and the nurses at their station softly speaking their predictions of her future.
The walls are white, with delightful little pictures prepared by the children, neatly displayed in a row. I’m positive that someone has taken the time to hang them with care.
I’m sitting here holding the dress that I had only purchased hours ago for her, in hopes that she will wear it home someday. I hold it close to me, because I know that if I put it down, it could get dirty. I’m hoping that tomorrow I will have the time to buy the sandals I saw, while getting some much needed time away.
I can see the perfectly polished white shoes swiftly coming down the hall. Please don’t let her be coming for me. As she approaches me, she carefully chooses her words, trying to be thoughtful, as she tells me that it’s getting late, and I should consider getting some sleep.
As I walk down the hall towards the door, I look back, and I realize that I would rather be sitting here, outside her door in the hallway, holding this dress for the rest of my life than to have to leave without her.
