Student Learning Opportunities

Orientation for First-time Online Learners

Online learning provides our students with convenient and flexible opportunities to complete course requirements. The faculty and staff at LFCC want to provide our new online learners with every opportunity to succeed. With that goal in mind, the Instructional Technology Office will be providing a series of hands-on workshops that will include an introduction to the Blackboard course management system, the VCCS student e-mail system, and various resources that are available to you through our Learning Resource Centers (i.e. libraries) to enhance your online learning experience.

If you plan to register for your first online course at LFCC for the summer 2008 semester or if you plan to take your first online course at LFCC in the near future, we encourage you to attend one of the workshops. If you simply want to learn more about Blackboard, VCCS student e-mail, and/or LFCC’s library resources, we welcome you to attend one of the workshops, too.

Dates and times of the workshops are as follows:

  • Saturday, May 3 at the Middletown Campus: 10 a.m. to noon in Room 256
  • Tuesday, May 27 at the Fauquier Campus: 1 to 3 p.m. in Room 109
  • Wednesday, May 28 at the Middletown Campus: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Room 256

Please RSVP to Selma Harter (sharter@lfcc.edu) if you plan to attend. It is very important that you pre-register so that we have you on the roster. Be sure to specify which session you plan to attend and provide your MyLFCC username so that you can be included in the Blackboard e-learning classroom.

Contact Joan Osborne at josborne@lfcc.edu or 540-868-7190 if you have any questions about the upcoming workshops.

Book Buyback at the Bookstore

It’s time to bring your books to the Bookstore so we can buy them back from you!
Some Frequently Asked Questions:

Q. When’s the best time to bring my books in?
A. Right after your exam or as soon as you are done with them.

Q. How much will I get for them?
A. It depends. If your text is being used again next semester and we still need it for our shelves, we will pay up to half what you paid for it. If it is not needed on this campus next semester but is still in edition and is in good condition, we pay wholesale rates. If you choose gift card instead of cash, we’ll add 10 percent to your total.

Q. What do you mean by good condition?
A. A clean book with no torn out pages, no answers filled in, and minimal highlighting. If you wouldn’t want to buy it, neither would we.

Q. Will you be buying books at the Luray-Page County Center?
A. Yes, on May 6, 2008 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Hope to see you soon at the Bookstore!

Student Accomplishments

Phi Beta Lambda/Future Business Leaders 52nd Annual State Conference

The Phi Rho Chapter of Phi Beta Lambda/Future Business Leaders has returned from their 52nd Annual State Conference in Richmond, Va.

Rachael Herbaugh competed in the Economic Analysis & Decision Making event and placed third.

Stephen Lock competed in Microeconomics. Although he did not place in the top three, he was a definite asset to the Conference team as their right-hand man. The chapter is really proud of him.

The Chapter placed second in the State for contribution to Project ASK (Association for the Support of Children with Cancer). Project ASK is the FBLA-PBL State Service Project. ASK is a non-profit association of parents, health professionals, and concerned citizens throughout Virginia. FBLA-PBL’s support of Project ASK allows the organization to conduct diagnostic research, fund the position for a patient counselor/chaplain and serve as a support group for families of children with cancer.

As advisor to these students I can only say JOB WELL DONE. I am proud to be associated with them.
On to Nationals in Atlanta, Georgia, in June.

Nursing Student Makes A & P Music

Lisa Bromfield isn't just any nursing student, Lisa learns by making music. Lisa puts a different perspective into the learning community. She has a creative talent that is essential to the world of learning, teaching and understanding the human body. She relates the complex anatomy and physiology of the body and applies a musical note to help make the learning experience memorable. Her songs are full of detail, color and are seasoned with a pedagogical tone so the listener hears the rhymicity of the human body. This rhymicity allows for an easier understanding of such a wonderful, complex subject.
