LFCC Technology Services IT Security Alert

Notification date: 3/12/08

A computer security alert has been issued by the Virginia Information Technology Agency (VITA), in response to two e-mail scams circulating the Internet. As a reminder, please do not open any attachments or click on any URL link contained in unsolicited e-mail messages. In addition, never provide personal or confidential information or respond in any way to unsolicited e-mails.

First E-mail Scam Alert:  An e-mail scam is being distributed which is using the threat of physical harm or death to the e-mail recipient. The unsolicited e-mail demands personal information and for money to prevent physical harm to the e-mail recipient. The e-mail scam warns the victim not to call the police.

Second E-mail Scam Alert:  An e-mail scam that appears as being sent from the U.S. Department of Justice is bogus. The e-mail scam describes that the recipient is currently involved with a lawsuit and requests that you open an e-mail attachment to review the lawsuit details. Do NOT open the attachment. The e-mail attachment poses a serious security risk to your personal information as well as the college information on your computer.

If you have received either of these two types of e-mail scams known as 'phishing scams,' simply delete them.

Thank you for your attentiveness to these situations.
